Timbalok (Timber crib wall)
What is Timbalok
Timber crib walls are a cellular mass gravity earth retaining system. One of the oldest gravity wall systems the work on the engineering principle that the mass of the installed system allows it to counteract the forces generated by earth pressure, water pressure and surcharge loading. The system utilises modular components in order to form a cellular structure which can retain heights up to 10 meters. They are quick to build and can be used for retention, as a facing for sheet piles, concrete piles, soil nailed/reinforced earth applications or as a sound barrier.
EvoGeo are the licensed distributors for the Timbalok system in Ireland. This timber crib system comprises a range of purpose designed interlocking timber components ensuring a cost effective form of construction as well as providing sustainable, environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing retaining solutions. The stress graded timber components are European sourced from (FSC) certified forests which is the gold standard in sustainable forestry management.
The timber components are treated with Tanalith E3494 in accordance with BS8417:2011. This water based treatment product is an ecologically friendly alternative to the Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) product that some manufacturers use.
Advantages of Timbalok
- Sustainability: Sourced from FSC certified forests the timber coupled with the use of fill material which can from either a site won or a recycled source make a Timbalok wall one of the most sustainable retaining solutions available.
- Aesthetic: The natural timber finish of the Timbalok is far softer than an equivalent reinforced concrete wall.
- Cost: A Timbalok wall can be installed for less than other retaining systems depending on the ground parameters and the height of wall required.
- Excavation depth: The Timbalok system required less excavation depth than traditional mass gravity structures such as gabions.
- Time saving: Timbalok is one of the fastest retaining systems to install with typical time savings in comparison to a 4m high gabion wall of 40%-50%.
- Use of recycled fill: Recycled concrete or bricks can be used for the crib fill as well as site won crushed rock.
- Permeability: The Timbalok system is 25%-30% permeable and therefore the possibility of pore water pressures building up behind the structure (one of the main reasons for retaining wall failures) is great reduced.
Timbalok fill material
The normal classification for the fill material is 75mm to 40mm crushed durable stone (eg. Limestone) however the crib wall can be designed with different sized stone as long as we know its specification prior to making our calculations. We can also formulate our design based on the use of recycled concrete or brick if these materials are desirable/available.
